What is the psychological difference between meditation and sleep?
Sleep and meditation are psychologically worlds apart. Neurologically both can be termed as the same as during both, the conscious brain takes a back seat and the subconscious takes the charge. To understand the difference between the two, we must first know what both fundamentally mean.
Sleep
What is sleep? Can we simply call it a state in which our mind is switched off? Taking a break, resting or shall we say doing nothing?
The answer is no. Because even when we are asleep, our brain is not shut down. The brain is conrdinating our body's internal working just as fine as when we are fully awake. But, it's not restricted to just the involuntary function's cordination. When we sleep, we do something that cannot be fully explained - we dream!
Thoughts, experiences, desires and imagination, all rolled into one surreal visual treat with such vivid details that one cannot differentiate it from reality and this is the work of the subconscious. It is when you sleep, it emerges out from the darkness to rule the lands.
Now that we know about sleep, let's move on to meditation.
Meditation is a state in which your mind is completely active yet free from unnecessary thoughts. Like sleep, it refreshes your mind, like sleep, it dwells in the realms of the subconscious. Everything is just the same as when you sleep, no wonder most of the people doze off whilst new to meditation, but there is one difference that sets the two apart.
While sleeping, your conscious brain is not in control of anything, it's the time when your subconscious runs wild and untamed. In contrast to that, in meditation, you use your conscious brain to take control of your subconscious and make it work as per your desires.
So the psychological difference between the two is all about being in control and being controlle
